Private Label Clothing Manufacturer: a founder's guide to launching your first collection.

Private label manufacturing is how most new streetwear and fashion brands get to market without buying a factory. This guide walks you through how it works, what it costs, and how a 30-piece MOQ with hands-on design support removes the biggest launch risk.

What is a private label clothing manufacturer?

A private label clothing manufacturer produces garments that are sold under your brand — your logo, your labels, your hangtags, your packaging. You own the brand and the customer relationship; the manufacturer owns the machines, the sampling team, and the QC process. It is the fastest, lowest-risk path for a new fashion or streetwear brand to go from a mood board to a real collection in customers' hands.

Private label is different from white label (where you rebrand generic stock products) and different from full cut-and-sew from scratch. Most emerging brands sit in the middle: proven blanks and constructions, custom prints, custom embroidery, custom trims, and custom packaging.

How private label manufacturing works, step by step

  1. Concept & tech pack. Share references, sketches, colorways, and measurements. A good partner will build the tech pack for you if you don't have one.
  2. Fabric & trim sourcing. Weights (e.g. 380 gsm French terry, 260 gsm heavyweight jersey), hardware, labels, hangtags, and packaging are sourced.
  3. Sampling. A pre-production sample is made, shipped, reviewed, and revised until fit, print, and finish are approved.
  4. Production. Your approved sample goes into a bulk run — cutting, sewing, printing, embroidery, washing, and finishing.
  5. Quality control. Every unit is inspected against the approved sample. Reject rate is the number that separates good factories from great ones.
  6. Packing & shipping. Polybags, mailers, hangtags, and worldwide door-to-door shipping.

MOQs: why a low minimum matters for new brands

MOQ (minimum order quantity) is the single biggest gatekeeper for a new brand. Traditional factories quote 300–500 pieces per style, per color — often $15,000+ locked into inventory before you know if the drop sells. That's how brands die on day one.

At Fateh Wear we run a 30-piece MOQ per style. That means you can launch a 3-style capsule with 90 total units, validate the drop with real customers, then reorder the winners at scale. Same premium construction, same custom trims — just sized for a founder's cash flow.

What private label manufacturing actually costs

Landed cost per unit depends on five levers:

  • Fabric weight and blend — a 400 gsm heavyweight hoodie costs more than a 240 gsm tee.
  • Decoration — puff print, embroidery, chenille patches, and rhinestones each add a per-unit cost.
  • Trims and packaging — woven neck labels, custom hangtags, and branded mailers.
  • Order size — unit cost drops as quantity rises; a 30-piece sampling run is priced differently than a 500-piece scale run.
  • Shipping mode — sea freight is cheapest, air is fastest, courier is best for small runs.

Founders should target a 4×–5× landed-cost markup at retail so there's room for wholesale, marketing, returns, and reorders.

Realistic timelines from concept to delivery

  • Tech pack & sourcing: 5–10 days
  • Sampling (1–2 rounds): 2–3 weeks
  • Bulk production (30–500 pcs): 3–5 weeks
  • QC & packing: 3–5 days
  • Worldwide shipping: 3–7 days (courier) or 25–35 days (sea)

A realistic first drop from a serious founder lands in 8–10 weeks total. Every week saved on approvals compounds — reply fast, and you'll be selling faster.

How to choose a private label manufacturer

  • Do they show real production photos — not stock renders?
  • Will they build a tech pack with you if you don't have one?
  • Is the MOQ realistic for your first drop, or built for wholesalers?
  • Do they handle QC in-house and share reject photos?
  • Can they handle rhinestones, chenille, puff, embroidery, and sublimation under one roof?
  • Do they ship worldwide door-to-door, including customs handling?
